Construction Features Earn Discounts for Homeowners
The state of Florida requires insurance companies to offer reduced rates for certain hurricane-resistant features. As part of our home inspection services, our inspector documents the features present in your home and produces a report for you to use in your request for reduced rates.
Most existing structures have one or more wind-resistive construction features and may qualify for some insurance discounts. These homes do not necessarily have to be built after the 2001 building code change. Through windstorm mitigation inspections, our professionals have saved homeowners hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars. We saved a family in Pinellas County more than $1,700 on a house built in the 1960s. A Brandon client of ours had a reduction in insurance of more than $700 dollars for a 1980s-era home.
What features qualify for discounts?
It is necessary for the house to have one or more of these wind-resistant construction features to qualify for some insurance discounts. In addition, houses built after 1994 in Miami-Dade or Broward counties and houses built after 2002 in the rest of the state generally have many such features and likely qualify for significant credits. Look for the following features for discounts:
- Roof Coverings, Such as Shingles That Meet the FBC Requirements
- Roof Decks Installed with Large Nails & Close Spacing
- Hurricane Clips/Straps to Hold the Roof Structure to the Walls
- Protection of Openings, Such as Windows & Glass Doors with Impact-Resistant Glazing
- Secondary Water Resistance to Keep the Roof from Leaking if Blown Off
- Newly Constructed Homes Built to the Code since March 1, 2002
- Homes built to the South Florida Building Code in Miami-Dade & Broward Counties after 1994.
Insurance companies may have more features that qualify for mitigation credits such as rated doors and gable end bracing.
